There is good news for skiers hoping to ski flight free to the Aosta Valley, as direct rail services between Milan and Aosta are due to restart from summer 2027.
The proposed service, made possible by the electrification of the Ivrea–Aosta railway line, would initially focus on weekend travel, with the aim of improving access for tourists and reducing the need to change trains at Turin or Chivasso.
The plans are an important step towards making the region’s ski resorts more accessible by public transport.
You can find out more about the proposed rail service in this article (in Italian). It’s important to note that the service would only go to Aosta, giving easy access to Pila, but an additional transfer by coach or taxi to resorts like La Thuile, Courmayeur and Cervinia.

Travel to Aosta Valley by train via Milan
Milan could also become a great gateway for UK skiers travelling by train.
European Sleeper launched its new Brussels–Milan night train service in September 2026, creating another option for travelling across Europe without flying.
From Milan, travellers could continue by rail to Aosta and connect with onward buses to resorts across the valley.
You can find out more about the new Milan night train service in Episode 328 of The Ski Podcast, when Mark Smith – the Man in Seat 61 – joined me to discuss the inaugural trip.
