Two British academics have put together these shocking photos, showing the extent of the glacial retreat in Chamonix.

Dr Kieran Baxter and Dr Alice Watterson from the University of Dundee compared photos taken a century ago in 2019.

The original photos were taken by the Swiss pilot and photographer Walter Mittelholzer, who flew over the Mont Blanc massif in a biplane.

The photos shows three glaciers in Chamonix: the Bossons, Argentière and the Mer de Glace. The amount of ice lost in the last hundred years is shocking…

Mer de Glace

The Mer de Glace “is now melting at the rate of around 40 metres a year and has lost 80 metres in depth over the last 20 years alone,” according to the glaciologist Luc Moreau.
