More than one hundred mayors of French ski resorts have called for the French state to support train travel.
Earlier this month, following the annual meeting of the Association Nationale des Maires des Stations de Montagne (ANMSM) at La Clusaz, the organisation issued a statement for help in adapting to the rapidly changing mountain environment.
Noting that the mountains are home to a permanent population of nearly 8.5 million people and support 400,000 direct and indirect jobs, the ANMSM has highlighted that snow-related tourism is essential to the future of mountain villages.
“The train must become the preferred means of transport”
In particular, they have called for the public authorities to develop and promote train travel to help reduce carbon emissions, especially with a focus on the ‘final mile’ to resort.
They recognise that 60% of the carbon footprint of mountain resorts is generated by transport and call on the state to “speed up and scale up the efforts already being made…to give preference to rail over car”.
The statement goes on to say:
“The train must become the preferred means of transport. To achieve this, the political will of the State is essential.”
