The French resort of Serre Chevalier has been recognised by the European Union for its outstanding use of renewable energy.

The Energy Efficiency Prize was awarded by the EU to the lift company Serre Chevalier Vallee Domaine Skiable for its ‘EnR’ project.

Consistent implementation of PV solar panels, wind turbines and use of hydroelectricity throughout the resort has marked the southern French Alps resort as a leader in sustainability measures.

The award is validation for the ‘Green Globe’ certification the resort was accredited with in 2018. The company – which is a subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes – has already invested 3.6 million euros in two wind turbines, 1722m2 of photovoltaic panels and hydroelectric turbines used when  snowmaking.

The resort’s aim is to generate 30% of their electricity requirements internally by 2023 and is currently on track for that figure.
