Environmental organization Mountain Riders has officially renewed Les Arcs’ Flocon Vert certification.

It confirms the resort’s place among a select group of Alpine destinations recognized for their commitment to sustainable mountain tourism based on 20 strict criteria in environmental and social sustainability.

‘On the path to excellence’

Les Arcs has the rare distinction of having been awarded two ‘Green Snowflakes’ – rated by Mountain Riders as ‘on the path to excellence’

First certified in 2020, Les Arcs/Bourg Saint Maurice has been a leader in mountain sustainability, with measures ranging from low-impact transport to biodiversity conservation.

Driving Sustainable Change in the Alps

Les Arcs was the first resort in the Savoie region to receive Flocon Vert certification. It represents a collective effort involving the local municipality, tourist office, regional tourism stakeholders and Les Arcs/Peisey-Vallandry mountain management.

Les Arcs’ sustainability initiatives

  • More arrivals by train
Roughly 25% of the resort’s visitors now arrive by train—more than double the French national average
  • Free funicular for train passengers
The resort’s funicular railway is free for train passengers in winter and for all pedestrians and paragliders in summer, and is targeting one million rides per year
  • Sustainable accommodation
Les Arcs has imposed a freeze on new tourist accommodation, prioritizing the renovation of existing properties to curb overdevelopment
  • Support for seasonal workers
A new semi-public company (SEM) has been launched to develop affordable housing solutions for seasonal staff
  • Year-round ecological tourism
The summer season (June 15–September 15) is aimed at offering visitors a full mountain experience, providing economic support to the area, while preserving the environment
  • B Corp accreditation
In 2024, Les Arcs achieved BCorp certification. You can find out more about this in Episode 195 of The Ski Podcast, when Iain interviewed Marie Clemence Vallier
